Have you ever wondered what the Romans left in London after their four hundred-odd years of occupation? You’d be surprised! Or what happened to all the monasteries crammed into the City of London when Henry VIII’s dissolved them in the 1530’s? The street names tell us they were once there.
Who was tried in the ancient Guildhall for attempting to assassinate Elizabeth I by putting poison on the saddle of her horse? Where can you see a dinosaur in the City? Ever wondered what happened to all the 600 London coffee houses in Queen Anne’s reign? Some are still around if you know where to look. Where are London’s lost rivers, and why can we no longer see most of them? Why can’t royalty enter freely into the City of London? Who is the Lord Mayor, and what does he do for the Financial heart of London? Where is the “Ward of Bridge Without” and where does the name come from?
These questions, and many more, can be answered on one of the City Walks led by Angela Lenman, a qualified City of London and Clerkenwell & Islington Guide. From a range of more than 20 topics, walks can be tailor-made to suit the requirements of your group, and will generally last from 1 ½ to 2 hours.
Angela will show you London’s secrets, from the Roman amphitheatre hidden deep beneath the very centre of today’s City, to the long-forgotten maypole which caused such friction amongst the population one May-Day long ago. Find out about the City’s ancient trades guilds, see some of their magnificent halls, visit some of the City’s serene churches, many of them rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren after the almost total destruction of London in the Great Fire of 1666, and visit some of the peaceful gardens which have replaced some of those lost churches.
Walks take place at the weekends or evenings (light and
weather permitting) and cost £5 per person (minimum charge
£50, larger groups by arrangement). Suitable for all age
groups.
Halloween walks, as well as illustrated talks on a range of topics, can be arranged on request.
